Leishmania canis is an insect-borne infectious disease. Insect-borne diseases are diseases that need to be transmitted and caused by insects. The vector insects that Leishmania canis needs to rely on are blood-sucking insects of the genus Sandfly, and they are highly specific to vector insects.
Leishmania primarily infects dogs, although cats may also be hosts, but are relatively rare. Humans and other mammals are also infected with Leishmania (the human kala-azar), but with species differences.
